At a gala presentation dinner for the 21st annual Sunshine Coast Sports Star of the Year Awards at the Hyatt Regency at Coolum on January 29th, Bucky Smith was awarded the June Canavan Encouragement Award for 2009 in recognition of his Etchells World Championship win in March.
The perpetual trophy presented to Bucky was renamed in honor of Sunshine Coast doctor June Canavan who was killed last year when the plane she was in crashed in Papua New Guinea en-route to Kokoda. June was highly regarded as a sports physician both nationally and internationally, particularly for her expertise with swimmers and triathletes.
Previously in 1990 former LCSC member Brad Schafferius received this award following his 1987 World A Class Catamaran Championship win and his selection in the 1988 Olympic Games in the Tornado class.
Commodore Stacey Brown was also recognised for her untiring work and expertise as a finalist in the Coach/Administrator section at the awards presentation.
We are extremely proud to have both Stacey and Bucky recognised for their achievements in both administration and competition at this prestegious event .
